18th Commonwealth Games kicked off in Melbourne

?The most wonderful weightlifting competitions in the history of the Commonwealth Games have just started here in Melbourne!?, stated Dr. Tamás Aján, IWF President, who has attended these Games for the last 30 years.
At an unprecedented and spectacular Opening Ceremony Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II officially opened the Games.
Featuring lifters from a record number of 36 member nations, the 8-day weightlifting program opened with a spectacular victory of India?s Kunjarani Devi in the women?s 48kg.
105 male and 60 female weightlifters will compete in the Games where, for the first time, B Group sessions had to be scheduled. Dr. Aján offered compliments on excellent staging of weightlifting to Mr. Sam Coffa, President of the Australian Commonwealth Games and Weightlifting Federations, Deputy Chairman of the Organising Committee, as well as to Mr. Matthew Curtain, Weightlifting Competition Manager. Their work is supported by a highly competent international Technical Officials? body including, for the first time, non-Commonwealth officials.
