Wang going for gold

The action begins at ExCeL today with the women’s 48kg weight category.

The 26-year-old Wang’s nearest challengers are likely to come in the form of Thailand’s Panida Khamsri, Japan’s Hiromi Miyake and Turkey’s Nurdan Karagoz.

Karagoz has overcome huge injury challenges in recent years to get to where she is now, but she is confident going into the Games.

‘Two years ago I had big operations. I had three major operations in one month on my elbows and my wrists,’ she said.

‘My arms were in casts and I couldn’t move my fingers. Everybody said to me I was never going to train or lift weights again.

‘My arms felt like they had been cut off. I felt bad and I cried a lot. And when they took the casts off, my arms and hands felt like two blocks of ice. But the minute I could finally grip my hands around a barbell again, I knew immediately I would be able to compete.’

She added: ‘I am quietly confident. I’m feeling good, I’m not nervous.’
