Additional women category discussed with the IOC

The IOC recently launched the coordination process regarding the sports program for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.

Attila Adamfi, IWF Director General had discussion at the IOC Headquarter with Sports Director Kit McConnell to coordinate the inclusion of the eighth women’s bodyweight category. During the meeting, women’s weightlifting long and rich history was presented together with the minimal investment needs to reach Gender Equality.

Following IOC’s Agenda 2020 Recommendation 11 – Foster Gender Equality, the IWF introduced a new bodyweight category in order to achieve IOC’s objective, effective on all IWF Events starting from 2017. This year’s Universiade in Taipei, TPE and the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, AUS are already confirmed to include the 90kg and +90kg bodyweight categories on their programme.

Following IWF’s proposal in 2015, the IOC already approved to add an additional category to the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, ARG reaching full Gender Equality in the athletes’ quota and the number of bodyweight categories.

The complete application will be submitted in February to the IOC.
