A moment of touch

 - I used to be a weightlifter, and through the process became administrator, trainer, official nationally and internationally.  - What was your personal motivation to candidate as Vice President? How did you react on the final result of voting?

-  I think it was time for me to serve our sport on the highest possible level. Regarding the voting result, on the one hand, I felt delighted that recognition was assured by many of the delegates. On the other hand, I felt the more votes I got, the heavier loads tie on my shoulder.

With tears in her eyes Contreras said that she was clean, aas the samples had proved it before, after and during the games as well. The shy athlete who ranked at the 5th position at the weightlifting competition in 53 kg was very sad and could hardly hide her shame. The Pan-American gold medalist said she was surprised and shocked when she heard this news at the press conference held by the Dominican Olympic Committee.
Contreras indicated that she was clean and she swore that she did not take any substance to make her results better during the Olympic Games in Beijing.

A world record: 60 years in service to weightlifting

Hubert Montgomery is a very special character in international  weightlifting community with a very special historical background.

When did you meet the world of weights for the first time?

To improve my body I started training with weights in 1949. I joined a weightlifting club in my town, Strand, near Cape Town in 1951 and was taught the three Olympic lifts, namely press, snatch and clean & jerk. My age was 19 years. I also played rugby for my local town, but got hooked on weightlifting and this became my sport.

Ma Wenguang,

the new IWF General Secretary
"I want to give weightlifting something in return"

What motivated you, as President of a highly successful Federation, in fact of the National Federation with the largest membership in the world, to take the field for the IWF General Secretary's position?

Well, I was a weightlifter myself and I have a deep emotional bond to the past, the present and the future of this sport. I believe that the IWF has accumulated immense professional knowledge and experience and has done extremely lot for the success and the development of the sport. I felt a kind of moral obligation to assess my own weight with the objective - in the case of success - to be able to support the world of weightlifting as closely as possible, including, of course, Chinese weightlifting. Now, time has come to realize this goal and I want to thank in my own name and on behalf of the Chinese Weightlifting Association for the confidence of the members at the Madrid Congress to become the General Secretary of the IWF. Chinese weightlifting is spreading and I hope that my country can increasingly promote the sport and help it getting stronger in other parts of the world as well.

What happened in Bucharest

What happened in Bucharest?  Everything good except world records!

Seen through the eyes of the person with the best seat in the house, the 35th men's and 15th woman's Junior Worlds Championships held from June 12 to 22 in Bucharest, Romania, fulfilled the expectations of a superb sports event.

As the delegations arrived
The organizing committee, chaired by Nicu VLAD, well known Olympic champion and President of the Federatia Romana de Haltere received forty nations in what could be considered the best organized junior world championships to this date.   Just a few months before, Nicu and his close collaborators hosted the European Championships in what served as a proper warm-up for this more complicated event attracting countries from all around the world.  Right from the airport the visitors were greeted by the organizers and transportation was highly efficient.  All delegations stayed at the Rin Grand Hotel, one of the best in Bucharest at almost half the regular price per room, considering the high tourist season.  The buffet meals were to the satisfaction of all tastes and the ever present chocolate cake was a fine complement to fresh fruits.

Matthias Steiner: Thank you. I find them something really very special. Namely, I am the first German to be elected Lifter of the Year. That did not happen before.

Rowing to raise funds to support weightlifting club

Raymond Williams

- Our sport struggles against more popular sports in Wales for example, Soccer, Rugby, Cricket and many more- Raymond Williams said. This leads to very little financial support from Central Government. Our club is "The Holyhead Weightlifting Club". It has over fifty members from novice up to international standard. We have had many great Athletes from Wales, David Morgan and Michaela Breeze are two World Class performers in our sport and t is hoped that we will have more in the future. Two athletes from our club are currently in the Development Squad for the 2012 London Olympics and I am hopeful that they will achieve their Goals.

Williams explains the secrets of their success, "Rob Wrench, my old PE teacher cast his net far and wide and found me. Looking at the history of the sport, in every decade there has been high achievement in this area, with Holyhead High School acting as a feeder for our talent."

He has high hopes for the future and is confident that Holyhead will continue to be a powerhouse in world weightlifting for years to come.

Paul Coffa:
The Institute is more than world class

-What were to main steps towards the institute?

The Oceania Weightlifting Institute was established in Fiji in 2002 - Paul Coffa answers.  The Oceania National Olympic Committee through Olympic Solidarity supported the athletes training at the Institute in preparation for the Athens Olympics and other international regional events.  Many top lifters moved to the Oceania Weightlifting Institute in Sigatoka , Fiji .   They were full time athletes.

Consequently the result was  successful. In 2004 within two years our results at regional level were very successful an we placed very well at the Olympics.   A year later we had a silver medal at 2005 World championships in Qatar and we repeated another silver medal in Santo Domingo in 2006.

We shifted the institute to Samoa and the place in Samoa was brilliant. There we had even more success as  we had two major international events.  One was the Pacific Rim International tournament in 2006 and then in 2007 we had the World Cup . I think we did our  job very well as we promoted weightlifting. In 2007 I was approached by the New Caledonia Territorial Olympic Committee,  the Government of New Caledonia ,  the Minister for Sport and Ronald Frere, President of New Caledonia weightlifting,  to consider relocating the Institute to New Caledonia .

Belgian Tom Goegebuer, European Champion 2009 was born in Ghent, 27th of March 1975, the year that Serge Reding, the most successful Belgian lifter died.

Tom Goegebuer,
European Champion:
my only goal is to enjoy what I am doing

What do you consider as your biggest achievement in your career?

"That is a difficult question. Of course my European title and my participation in the Olympics will stay unforgettable great memory, but maybe my biggest achievement is to have been on an international level for so many years. My European title 2009 was also my 11th consecutive participation in the senior European championships."

How is it to have your father coaching you?

"My father has always been next to me in my career, so he really knows me very well and I have 100% faith in his coaching decisions and that is very important. The disadvantage is that a father is usually very protective and not willing to take much risks, but I guess it is also the reason that I have been relatively free from injuries."

Richard, as father and coach of Tom Goegebuer, can you tell us about the start of Tom's career?

"I had been a weightlifter at national level for years, so Tom has always been in contact with weightlifting. Even as a young kid Tom wanted to try weightlifting himself. But besides some playing with an empty broomstick I wanted him to wait with serious weight training till he got a bit older.
Being promised to get his chance when he turned twelve, my son filled his time with a lot of other sports, like running, swimming, windsurfing, cross-country skiing, gymnastics.
When he finally turned twelve, he enthusiastically started training in the summer of 1987 or his home club Royal Olympic Ghent.
At an age of 15 years old he managed to break his first national record (58 snatch in the -44kg), and from then on he haunted for all the other national records in his bodyweight classes and different age groups. As Tom had always been a good student, the first concern was to get a good education, so in 1993 he started to study physics at the University of Ghent, and he continued it successfully with a master degree in medical radiation physics in 1999.
So these years were very hard to combine with weightlifting and he had to drop a lot of international competitions and trainings sessions but he continued lifting and in 1997 he competed for the first time in the Senior World Championships (Chiang Mai- Thailand) with a 16th place as a result in the -59kg class (107.5 snatch & 137.5 kg Jerk)."

Matthias Steiner:
I'm on a good path

Last week end it was Steiner's first appearance in Austria after nearly four years. The Austrians have forgiven him to change for German citizenship. The"Sportsman of the Year", with his girlfriend, N24-presenter Inge Posmyk, expect  their first child during next spring.

- Have you reckoned with the warm reception in your native country?
Steiner: I was a bit nervous, but the great thing about Austria is people have forgiven me, that's great. I think people understand now why I left. The move was correct, but it's also nice to be here again - especially because of the delicious food that I miss most of the time.

- Has the feeling of happiness, soon to become a father also motivated you during competition?
Steiner: Private happiness, is certainly not a disadvantage in sport - on the contrary. I am a family man and now simply very happy.

- Do you know whether you have a girl or a boy? And when is your wedding planned?

Steiner: The most important thing is that our child is born healthy. We ourselves do not know the gender of our baby yet. Sorry, there is no wedding date yet.

- Coach Frank Mantek was pleased with your performance. Do you agree with him?
Steiner: I am very satisfied. I was not quite fit in the last week of training, so I was surprised that it went so well. The plan was to lift 190 kg and 235 kg. I have met these requirements.  It was very important  I had six succesful attempts. So I  completely follow my schedule for the World Championships.

Born on 25th September 1949. Teacher of PE, speaks five languages. He is the Vice President of the Finnish Weightlifting Federation. EWF Committee member. First elected to the IWF SRC in 2005, now his funtion was prolonged for another term. One of themost reliable and experienced technical experts. He is an often empolyed lecturer at courses all over the world, mainly in Africa.

- How did you start your sports career?
- My "career" in weightlifting started in 1966 when I was 17. I was a active sportsman. After starting my studies in PE in 1970  weightlifting remained a little bit in the background.
Year 1975:  I was selected as the first full time employee in Finnish Weightlifting Federation by title "Chief of coaching and education" In that capacity I worked for 14 years up to 1988.

- How did you start your international career?

- My two terms in development were; first 1988-1992 and the other 1998-2001. Both assignments were in Tanzania as a Project Director in Finnish Governement funded NGO projects. First by name "Sports for All" and the other "Marangu Trail Improvement Project in Kilimanjaro National Park".During these years I was mostly absent from weightlifting.  All the other years I have worked for Finnish Weightlifting Federation member of various commmittees, board member, vice president and so on. Additionally I have been a lecturer in many IOC Olympic Solidarity weightlifting courses all over the world. As a TO I have worked in many international events since 1981.

Alexandr Dudoglo:
I dream of winning Olympic medal in London in 2012

I meet Alexandr Dudoglo, 20 years old weightlifter, one of the best Moldovan sportsmen, in a weightlifting hall in a specialized sport school situated in quiet place near a park. But in the hall, as well as in director's office, there was a strong smell. No, not of autumn flowers, grass and yellow leafs, but of fresh paint. In the hall the reparation continues.

- How Alexandr and other lifters can train among such conditions?  Do you feel discomfort?

 - We are already used to that. The main problem is that in this school there is only one grip Eleiko the other parts of the weight are rather different from the modern weights used at the international championships. All the weights in our school are older that I am and were manufactured in the former USSR .

  - As I know in Chisinau (capital of Moldova ) there is another weightlifting hall, the only hall in Moldova equipped with 3 Eleiko barbels. Why are you not preparing for the upcoming world championship in Korea there?

 - I have 2 trainings every day. I get here to my native sport school from my home within 30-40 minutes by walk, it takes one hour or more by public transport to get to the other hall and it also depends on traffic. This year I became a student of the National University of Physical culture and Sports, so I have absolutely no time for 2 more additional hours for the trip to the trainings....

We have a lot young talents, but little chance to bring them up

Interview with Tudor Casapu, President Weightlifting Federation of Moldova, 1992 Olympic champion, Colonel of the police

-Situation in weightlifting today is very hard, as currently in all sports in Moldova. Unfortunately Republic of Moldova belongs to one of the poorest countries in Europe where  sport financing is short. The global financial and economic crisis of the last year did not make our situation easier.

There are old traditions in weightlifting in Moldova. Our athletes won lot of titles during the last 20 years. Every year new young lifters emerge, some of them develop quickly, but it is sad to conclude, that we can't cover normal conditions for them in training and in life and finally we loose them. Federation where enthusiasts of weightlifting work tries to do all the best, but. This year we managed to open two specialized sport halls in Rautel (native village of the world champion Vadim Vacarciuc) and Singerei, but we could equip them only with two old set of barbells. Can you imagine how long 40-50 boys and girls must wait in row for a single attempt?....

The elation brought Jadi up to the stage to celebrate victory while Hoang, whose failure meant he was deprived of a podium spot, laid flat in sheer dejection.

They consummated their three-year romance by getting married last October  and then had to decide where to settle down. Mushyk suggested his home country, where as a top athlete he is entitled to an apartment, car, plot of land and a respectable salary.
