Parviz Jalayer:
The secret of my success was merely love

Parviz Jalayer was born in Rey in 1939 and started the sport of weightlifting professionally in Niroo sports club in 1957 .

In 1963 he had a chance to be the member of the national team of Iran. Since then he has been an Iranian national team member for 6 years and in 1970 he finished weightlifting  and started his career as a coach .

He has a high school diploma , married with two children.

His titles are as follows:

1964 Asian Games silver , 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games 7th position.1966 Tbilisi Cup gold medal. 1966 Bangkok Asian championships gold , 1966 Berlin world championships bronze.1967 Moscow cup winner. 1967 Mexico world championship bronze medal , 1968 Asian Games gold medal , 1968 Mexico world championships silver medal and 1968 Olympic Games silver medal in Mexico City.

One time he broke the world record (67.5 kg category).

These are the most memorable moments of Jalayer's glorious performance , a champion with an excellent list of high ranking results. In 1969 he moved one weight category higher. The same year during only one hour time he managed to break the Iranian an Asian records eight times.

 - How did you select weightlifting ?

- My interest and my love for this sport made me to choose weightlifting.

- What were your greatest memories?

-In 1968 Mexico Olympic games I deserved the gold medal but Polish Basanowski won. In press I had only 7th rank by 125 kg, but in snatch (132.5 kg) and in clean and jerk (165 kg) I was able for the second place resulted silver medal in total.  My awful press is still a bad memory .

One of my good memories which I can never forget goes back to 1966 Berlin world championships. My main rival was Bagócs from Hungary. We were very well prepared to fight for one of the medals in total. Since I was 100 grams heavier I had to lift 2.5 kg heavier weight. In clean & jerk , Bagócs lifted 150 kg and I did 152.5 kg successfully. During the second attempt he did 155 Kgs and I did 157.5 Kgs  for the third performance he lifted 160 kg without any difficulty.  Katsura from Russia followed  him by 162.5 kg. I chose 162.5 kg and no one thought I would be able to lift that weight but I did and could grab the bronze medal in total ahead of Bagócs by 2,5 kg difference.

 - What was the secret of your success?

- The love for this sport. I recommend the young athletes to have interest in their sports they wish to succeed . Otherwise they will face a dead end road ahead of them.
