An engine of zone three
ROBERT Rose is one of the men behind the recent success of Seychelles' weightlifting and now he has the responsibility of overseeing the sport's development in Africa's less-developed zone three.
Rose was re-elected a member of the Weightlifting Federation of Africa (WFA) executive committee before being nominated to head the zone.
Zone three comprises Seychelles, Mauritius, Reunion, Madagascar, Comoros, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Democratic Republic of Congo, Congo, Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Namibia, Malawi, Mozambique, Zanzibar, Somalia, Tanzania, Gabon, Zambia, Angola and Botswana.
"This position is a big achievement for me and Seychelles," Rose told .
"Although a small country, Seychelles has produced technically good lifters over the years. The results of our lifters in the Indian Ocean Islands Games, African Weightlifting Championship and the Commonwealth Games showed that we Seychellois can achieve great things."
"I have been given the role of overseeing the development of weightlifting in zone three to up the level. All federations in the zone have to report to me and I have to monitor everything. It's going to be a tough work, but I'm ready to do my best."
Rose, who has been an international referee since 1993, said Seychelles stands to benefit from the newly elected executive committee.
"Lybian Mhalhel has promised to help Seychelles weightlifting. But we have to continue working hard to receive help from overseas," added Rose, who has been involved with weightlifting for 20 years. He first took the post Seychelles Weightlifting Federation president in 1999 after Michel Delorié resigned.
Mauritius is to host the first competition of the zone, the African Championship for junior and senior lifters.
