South American gold medals

M85kg The Latvian lifter SUHAREVS Ritvars (LAT) was up to a promising start with 3 good lifts in the Snatch the higher being 154kg. This put him in leading position however in the Clean and Jerk he might have started too high. He missed 176kg twice and 178kg so couldn’t score a Total. SOLIS ARBOLEDA Juan Felipe (COL) made 6 good lifts and won the 3 Silver medals of the competition only 1kg behind the Gold Medallist VALLENILLA SANCHEZ Keydomar Giovanni (VEN) who lifted a Total of 329kg. Third in the Snatch, AVAGYAN Karen (ARM) missed twice 179kg in the Clean and Jerk. His only successful attempt at 173kg placed him 5th, but he ranked 3rd in the Total with 318kg and won the Bronze medal. 6th in the Snatch, BANG Seohyun (KOR) won the Bronze medal in the Clean and Jerk and ended just 1kg behind AVAGYAN in the Total. W69kg 3 athletes came out at 93kg for their first attempt in the Snatch and all 3 only managed to lift the weight during their second attempt. TILER Rebekah Jade (GBR), CIKAMATANA Eileen Floanna Maria (FIJ) and TANG Jing (CHN) all went for 96kg for their third attempt but only TILER made it! PALACIOS DAJOMES Angie Paola (ECU) started with an easy 94kg and went 97kg for her second and 101kg for her third attempt. All three lifts were executed with precision and great technique. In the Clean and Jerk, she came out first from the 4 and went for 113kg and 117kg. He missed her third attempt at 120kg ranking 4th, but still kept her leading position and Gold Medal in the Total. TILER came out in the Clean and Jerk to secure 115kg first and went for 118kg and 121kg all good lifts. She ended with 217kg, just 1kg behind PALACIOS. CIKAMATANA followed on TILER with 116kg – missing it – but making 117kg for her second attempt. With an explosive 122kg she won the Gold and the Bronze in the Total with 215kg. TANG made it silver in the Clean and Jerk and could get the third place in the Total but missed her last attempt at

LOPEZ LOPEZ Yeison (COL) made it again!

M77kg Unstoppable all the way to the Gold medals and the Youth World Records, LOPEZ LOPEZ Yeison (COL) was explosive! He dominated the field and had no challengers. His Total of 351kg was 30kg above Silver medallist and almost 50kg over Bronze medallist (307kg). He kept breaking his own World Records set at the 2016 IWF Junior World Championships in Tbilisi, GEO. Twice in the Snatch (first setting it to 157kg and then to 160kg) once in the Clean and Jerk (setting it to 190kg) and once in the Total setting it from the 346kg made in Tbilisi to an impressive 351kg. Breathtaking attempts from LOPEZ LOPEZ who even came out to give a try to a 195kg Clean and Jerk that he missed. Pan-American Youth and Junior Silver medallist MAURUS Harrison James (USA) had also 5 good lifts just like LOPEZ LOPEZ and kept his concentration until the end lifting with precise moves and great control of the bar. He found no contender to take the 3 Silver medals from him and left the 3rd place lifter LOMANOV Yevgeniy (KAZ) far behind. LOMANOV - 4th place in the Clean and Jerk       where Bronze was awarded to AHMADNEJAD Ahmad (IRI) – ended with a Total of 307kg mainly due to his advantage gained in the Snatch. W63kg The Gold medal was about two chinese athletes: HUANG and SU. The balanced competition showcased 6 good lifts from HUANG Shan (CHN) reaching 94kg-117kg-211kg. SU leading by 1kg in the Snatch, missed her last attempt in the Clean and Jerk at 117kg. This left second place to the Thai lifter SONKAEW but not in the Total where she still came up Silver medallist with 210kg. Competition for the third place was also about two athletes, 3rd place in the Snatch ESCOBAR AGUIRRE Hellen Andrea (COL) but only by 1kg and 4th place SONKAEW Rodsukon (THA). Clean and Jerk determined the final order and SONKAEW Rodsukon (THA) won the Bronze medal managing to get that 1kg advantage back from the Colombian

CUMMINGS JR Clarence (USA) improved his own Youth World Record

M62kg First Gold medal for Uzbekistan! Tension was on almost until the end for ERGASHEV Adkhamjon (UZB) who kept on watching the other competitors while making sure to secure the lead. The Chinese lifter WEI Yunban (CHN) ranking 4th in the Snatch made it to 156kg in the Clean and Jerk – taking the Gold medal but it wasn’t enough for the Total where he won a Silver. Bronze Medal went to GARAEV Zulfat (RUS) with a second place in the Snatch and a 4th place in the Clean and Jerk. He couldn’t make it to the podium of the Clean and Jerk, where the Korean SHIN Bi grabbed the medal with 150kg. M69kg CUMMINGS JR Clarence (USA) did it again! Just like in Tbilisi earlier this year he broke the first Youth World Record of the competition at the 2016 IWF Youth World Championships in Penang, MAS. Winning with a great superiority in numbers and showing impressive power and technique, CUMMINGS in now Junior and Youth World Champion and improved his own Youth World Record with 2kg setting it to 182kg. He also equaled the one he set in Tbilisi at 317kg in the Total. With a Bronze and 2 Silver Medals, SOLTANI Hossein (IRI) registered today his first result achieved at an IWF competition being 131kg in the Snatch, 164kg in the Clean and Jerk and 295kg in the Total. YAZICI Ferhat Ali (TUR) took the second place in the Snatch, but less comfortable in the Clean and Jerk he missed a crucial attempt at 160kg. With a Total of 291kg he however finished 7kg ahead of third place in the Clean and Jerk, DUMITRASCU Paul (ROU) who ended 4th in the Total. W58kg Women’s 58kg showcased first medals for most of the countries. CAKIN Aysegul (TUR) won the first Gold medal here in Penang for Turkey while TYMOSHCHUK Mariia (UKR) got a Silver and a first medal for Peru being a Bronze was awarded to PAREDES VASQUEZ Eldi Jhasmin (PER). After the Snatch, competition seemed to be between TYMOSHCHUK and CAKIN – only 2kg between the two, but the Turkish lifter took back the lead in the Clean and Jerk with 104kg over 100kg for the Ukrainian lifter ranking third. PONCIANO RODRIGUEZ Cristal Guadalupe (MEX) third in the Snatch got back to 4th place in the Clean and Jerk and couldn’t make it to the podium with 176kg in the Total. With 75kg in the Snatch ranking her 5th, the Peruvian PAREDES VASQUEZ Eldi Jhasmin made an impressive third attempt in the Clean and Jerk with 102kg! M56kg and W53kg – Both Golds are for China

M56kg Impressive results for the Chinese lifter HUANG Gaoming (CHN) who surpassed all of his contenders in the Men’s 56kg bodyweight category with his Total of 255kg. Lifting 20kg more than the Silver Medallist, HUANG found no one to endanger his leading position. He won all three Gold Medals and was crowned Youth World Champion here in Penang with only 1 missed attempt in the Snatch. India took Silver with a Total of 235kg for LALRINNUNGA Jeremy (IND) and Bronze with 233kg for UTHUPANDI Raja (IND) – who was only 9th in the Snatch. After placing 2nd in the Snatch, LALRINNUNGA only got 5th in the Clean and Jerk and had to wait until all remaining competitors took their attempts to see if he could make it to the podium which he did. Third in the Snatch, GOCMENOGLU Yusuf (TUR) tried 125kg twice in the Clean and Jerk but couldn’t make it. His first lift at 120kg was his only successful and only placed him 11th placing him 7th in the Total. The Bronze Medal in the Clean and Jerk was awarded to RIVERA BARROS Julian Javier (ECU) missing the podium by only 1kg. W53KG Snatch competition was quite balanced and the podium went to 3 lifters - SINISTERRA TORRES Yenny (COL), KONOTOP Kamila (UKR) and KHAMBAO Surodchana (THA) - lifting the same weight of 78kg. With only 1 successful attempt, the Chinese YU Mengqian (CHN) was 1kg behind. However she controlled the weights in the Clean and Jerk and with her impressive technique she executed 3 good lifts. Three kilos were enough for her to grab the Gold in the Total with 182kg. Second and third respectively in the Clean and Jerk, SINISTERRA TORRES Yenny (COL) and KHAMBAO Surodchana (THA) also won the silver and bronze in the Total with 179kg and 178

AL-HABSI Ahmed Salim Said won the first medal for Oman

W44kg Two South American countries, Colombia and Venezuela were joined by Indonesia at the first medal ceremony held during the 2016 IWF Youth World Championships Penang, Malaysia. The 44kg Women opened the show and some of them stepped for the first time on the international sport stage. Athletes showed a balanced performance BERRIO Zuluaga Manuela Andrea (COL) happened to be the opponent to defeat. None of the other competitors could even come close and she easily won the Gold medal with 67kg-87kg and a Total of 154kg. Silvar medal went to VINATASARI Nur (INA) while the third place was awarded both in the Snatch, Clean and Jerk and in the Total to Quintana Mendoza Rosielis Coromoto (VEN) M50kg This is the last IWF World Championships where winning by bodyweight is still possible because following the modification of the TCRR, bodyweight advantage is abolished as of 1st January 2017. This advantage gave the victory to LE Nguyen Quoc Bao (VIE) ending with a Total of 211kg – just as CHOMCHUEN Natthawat (THA)      who happened to be heavier at this competition. Third place of the podium went to GARCIA PEREZ Jairo Luis (COL). Penang staged the 1st medal ever won at a World Championships for Oman! It is a big achievement for AL-HABSI Ahmed Salim Said (OMA) and shows that investing in development and grassroots can be rewarding. He achieved it in the Clean and Jerk and missed the podium in the Total by only 1kg (lifting 208kg). W48kg Women’s 48kg bodyweight category brought the first gold medal of China as ZHAO Jinhong (CHN) – with a strong dominance over the field – lifted 80kg in the Snatch, 95kg in the Clean and Jerk and made a Total of 175kg – being 13kg more than then the silver medallist. With 162kf, FANG Wan-Ling (TPE), Asian Youth Champion in 2015 ended up second. 4th place in the Snatch and ending also 4th in the Clean and Jerk, REICHARDT Hayley Marie (USA) defeated those – DOGAN Ayse (TUR) 3rd / NANTHAWONG Chiraphan (THA) 2nd – taking away the podium from her. REICHARDT made a Total 152kg and won the Bronze Medal proving that USA is again a country to count on a serious medal

IWF Executive Board meeting and Congress in Penang, MAS

The IWF had an Executive Board meeting and Congress in Penang, Malaysia prior to the 2016 IWF Youth World Championships to start on 20 October. Constitution and By-Laws Francois Carrard Dr. iur., Attorney at Law presented the amendments to the IWF Constitution and By-Laws amended and approved by both the Executive Board and Congress. As another move towards gender parity, the new Constitution will provide a minimum of two positions for Women in the leadership one being Vice President and the other one Executive Board member. The IWF Technical and Competition Rules and Regulations were ratified effective from 1 January 2017. Finance   The Board received update on the IWF Financial status from IWF Financial Advisor for 2016 and approved the Budget for 2017. Allocation of the 2019 IWF World Championships The Executive Board unanimously decided to attribute the hosting right for the 2019 IWF World Championships to the Thai Amateur Weightlifting Association - Pattaya, THA. Development Program A status report on the 2016 Development Program was presented and the 2017 Development Program was approved. Both were presented to the Congress delegates. Membership The Memberships Commission presented its report. Anti-Doping Both bodies received update on Anti-Doping related issues. Communication and Marketing Both the Executive Board and the Congress received a report about current projects and changes carried out in the field of Communication and Marketing. Rio 2016 Congress delegates received an inclusive report praising the success of weightlifting at the Olympic Games and the wonderful conditions provided to weightlifting by the Organizing Committee. Appreciating the work of Pedro Meloni, Weightlifting Sport Manager, the sport legacy remaining in Brazil and the new cooperation possibilities such as the very successful Spectator experience zone, Congress delegates had an insight in the memorable Rio 2016 Games. Reports on the preparation of the future events 2016 FISU Merida, MEX / 2017 IWF YWC Bangkok, THA / 2017 IWF JWC Tokyo, JPN / 2017 Universiade Taipei, TPE / 2017 IWF WC Anaheim, USA The Qualification System for 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, ARG that was approved by the IOC was presented to the delegates.   The President of the Iranian Weightlifting Federation, Ali Moradi appeared in front of the Executive Board and apologized also on behalf of the athlete, Behdad Salimikordasiabi and his coach Sajjad Anoushiravani for their behavior at the incident that happened in the +105kg competition at the Rio Olympic Games. He said they were extremely sorry and apologized to those concerned. The Executive Board accepted the apology and warned the Iranian Federation that such occurrences should not happen
